There are schools around the country which are committed to finding creative ways to help their students embrace the diversity found within their classrooms. Teachers and students from the Morse Pond School (Falmouth, MA) have begun an annual celebration. The Morse Pond School Lip Dub was done by 5th and 6th grade students at the elementary school. A lip dub, which is a type of video that combines lip synching with an audio dubbing to make a music video, was done to celebrate a schoolwide anti-bullying celebration called “No Guff”. The week-long celebration held January 23 – 27, 2012 has been held annually since 2010 and is focused on rewarding positive behaviors and “random acts of kindness.” What a great way to get young students involved in creating cultures of acceptance.
Two Stories That Bring Smiles
A Smile as Big as the Moon, which is based on a book of the same name by Mike Kersjes is a truly triumphant story. This Hallmark Hall of FameMovie presented on January 29, 2012 focused on a special education teacher’s dream of helping his students attend Space Camp. Both the movie and the book bring an inspiring spirit of student-centered education to the table.
